I almost laughed.

“I could say the same thing.”

The second boy woke.

He rubbed his eyes.

Looked at me.

Then Claire.

“Mom?”

“It’s okay.”

He leaned against her.

I stared at both children.

“How old are they?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

I asked again.

“How old?”

“Five.”

My mouth went dry.

I sat on my heels because suddenly standing seemed difficult.

“Claire.”

“Don’t.”

“Are they mine?”

She closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“Yes.”

Everything inside me went silent.

Not dramatic.

No roaring.

No sudden music.

Just absence.

I looked at the boys.

Then her.

“You’re sure?”

Her face hardened.

“I did not spend five years guessing.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“I know exactly what you meant.”
