I swallowed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Something almost like disbelief crossed her face.
Then sadness.
“Margaret really never told you.”
Not “your mother.”
Margaret.
Like the name itself had become evidence.
“Told me what?”
Claire reached toward the old blue suitcase.
Unzipped a side pocket.
Pulled out a thick bundle held by an elastic band.
She handed it to me.
Letters.
Dozens.
My name.
My old office address in Bellmere.
Some stamped RETURN TO SENDER.
Others unopened.
Several dated six years earlier.
Then emails printed from an old account I had abandoned.
Then a cashier’s check.
Sixty thousand dollars.
Signed by Margaret Bennett.
I stared.
“What is this?”
Claire’s voice went flat.
“Your mother’s first offer.”
“Offer for what?”
“To disappear.”
I looked up.
Claire continued.
“She came to see me shortly after you left for Cedarport.”
