One moved.
Opened his eyes.
Sat up.
I forgot how to breathe.
Dark wavy hair.
Square jaw despite being five years old.
A tiny notch splitting the left eyebrow.
I had the same notch.
So had my father.
I stepped closer.
The boy stared at me.
Claire opened her eyes.
For one second, she looked confused.
Then she saw me.
She went white.
Her first instinct was not to smile.
It was to reach for both boys.
Pull them closer.
That hurt more than I expected.
“Claire.”
She whispered:
“No.”
I stopped.
“It’s me.”
“I know.”
Her voice trembled.
She looked toward the departure board.
Then back at me.
“You weren’t supposed to be here.”
