I worked.

Too much.

And beneath all of it remained one unanswered question.

Why had Claire left?

Six years earlier, I had been thirty-eight.

Claire thirty-four.

We had been together for almost three years.

I had bought a ring.

She never knew.

I left Bellmere for several weeks to oversee a hotel launch in Cedarport.

When I returned, her apartment was empty.

Phone disconnected.

No forwarding address.

Emails bounced.

Letters came back.

My mother, Margaret Bennett, had been strangely calm about it.

“She realized she was never comfortable in our world.”

I argued.

“She loved me.”

Margaret replied:

“People can love someone and still understand they don’t belong together.”

I kept searching for several weeks.

Then my pride became stronger than my grief.

That remains one of the things I regret most.

I stopped.

Now Claire was twenty feet away.

Older.

Thinner.

Exhausted.

And next to her were two boys.
