I asked her the same question two more times over the following two years, in slightly different words each time, hoping the answer might shift if I found the right phrasing. It never did.
We wanted a daughter. God, we wanted one.
I’d had a name picked out since I was nineteen years old, long before Owen and I had even met, tucked away the way some people keep a favorite recipe they never quite get around to making.
Owen never said much about it out loud, but he was the one who kept a small box of newborn girl clothes in the garage instead of donating it after Toby outgrew infancy. Every time I mentioned finally clearing it out, he’d say, “Let’s give it another month.”
Eventually I stopped bringing it up. He stopped bringing it up too. That’s what closing a subject actually looks like when it isn’t really closed at all — you just quietly stop putting it into words.
