You have to understand what that word — baby — actually does inside our house.
We have three boys. Milo, nine. Asher, seven. Toby, four. Loud, filthy, wonderful in the specific, exhausting way three boys under ten manage to be all at once.
After Toby was born, my doctor sat across from Owen and me with my chart open on her lap and asked him to stay for the rest of that appointment, because she wanted him to hear what came next directly from her, not secondhand from me later that night.
She used the word probably. Not could. Not there’s a risk.
She told us a fourth pregnancy would probably kill me, and that even if it somehow didn’t, I’d likely spend most of it confined to a hospital bed, two hours away from the three children who already needed me at home.
I asked her if there was any version of it that might be safe.
She said no.
