Part 3
The new doctor introduced herself at seven.
Dr. Priya Shah.
She was calm.
Direct.
She explained that my labor had started naturally overnight.
The contractions were becoming regular.
My daughter was ready whether I was emotionally prepared or not.
“I’m terrified.”
“That makes sense.”
“I don’t want to be sedated.”
“We will discuss every medication before giving it.”
“I want Laura in the room for any consent.”
Laura nodded.
Dr. Shah agreed.
“And Ethan?”
My brother raised his hand.
“I’m not watching anything below the shoulders.”
I laughed weakly.
Dr. Shah smiled.
“He can stay nearby.”
For the first time since hearing Daniel’s plan, the delivery room felt like a place where I might survive.
But my mind kept returning to Marcus Hale.
I needed to know.
Had he really intended to do it?
Had he agreed?
Was Daniel bluffing?
Was the conversation enough?
Laura would not speculate.
Neither would the detective.
His name was Samuel Reed.
He spoke to me briefly before labor became too intense.
He asked me to confirm that the recording had not been edited.
I confirmed it.
He asked about the sedative.
I told him what I saw.
He asked whether I still had the cup.
I pointed toward the bathroom.
A hospital staff member had already secured the room.
The cup was gone from the sink.
But the tea packet, spoon, and tray remained.
Daniel had touched everything.
Detective Reed told me they would document what they could.
Then he asked,
“Has your husband ever threatened you before?”
“No.”
“Been violent?”
“No.”
“Controlled your finances?”
“Not exactly.”
Laura looked at me.
I corrected myself.
“He tried.”
“How?”
“He constantly asked about the company.”
“What kind of questions?”
“Share structure.”
“Ownership.”
“My grandmother’s trust.”
“Insurance.”
The detective wrote something.
“Life insurance?”
I nodded.
My stomach turned.
Six months earlier, Daniel had suggested increasing my policy.
He said it made sense because of the baby.
I thought it was responsible.
Now the memory made me sick.
“How much?”
“Three million.”
Ethan stared at me.
“You never told me.”
“It seemed normal.”
Laura closed her eyes briefly.
Detective Reed asked,
“Who is the beneficiary?”
I knew the answer.
“Daniel.”
He wrote it down.
Then he asked,
“Who is Vanessa?”
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“How do you know that name?”
“We heard the recording.”
Of course.
I had forgotten.
“My husband’s marketing consultant.”
“Do you know she’s pregnant?”
“Now I do.”
Ethan turned away.
His jaw clenched.
The detective continued.
“Do you know if the child is your husband’s?”
“He said it was.”
“We’ll verify what’s relevant.”
1 thought on “The night before I gave birth, I overheard my husband secretly offer the doctor $500,000 to make sure I died during delivery so he could start a new life with his five-month-pregnant mistress. I pretended to be asleep—but by the next day, his plan had completely backfired.”
