Laura looked offended.
“I advised you.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You said if I came here, you’d have me removed.”
“That was advice.”
I cried and laughed at the same time.
For thirty seconds, the nightmare loosened its grip.
Then Laura sat beside me.
“Claire.”
Her tone changed.
I looked at her.
“We need to talk about your estate documents.”
My stomach tightened.
“What about them?”
“When did you last update your will?”
“Two years ago.”
“Who inherits if you die?”
I already knew the answer.
But suddenly I did not want to say it.
“Daniel.”
“And if he survives you?”
“He gets controlling interest in Bennett Properties.”
Laura nodded.
“What about the baby?”
“A trust.”
“Who controls the trust?”
My blood went cold.
“Daniel.”
Ethan swore.
Laura continued.
“That gives law enforcement a clear financial motive.”
I looked toward the door.
Daniel had not only planned to inherit from me.
He had planned to control everything left to our daughter too.
My company.
My properties.
My child.
All of it.
1 thought on “The night before I gave birth, I overheard my husband secretly offer the doctor $500,000 to make sure I died during delivery so he could start a new life with his five-month-pregnant mistress. I pretended to be asleep—but by the next day, his plan had completely backfired.”
