A scar.
Three narrow lines forming something that looked almost like a crooked star.
My hand froze.
I knew that scar.
Or at least I knew a scar exactly like it.
I had spent twenty-eight years trying not to remember it.
“Turn around.”
Ruth looked over her shoulder.
“What?”
“Please. Turn around.”
My voice sounded strange.
She obeyed.
I pulled off one glove with my teeth, grabbed a towel, and scrubbed more carefully around the scar.
Three lines.
One longer than the other two.
My heart began pounding.
“No.”
Ruth frowned.
“Are you all right?”
