My Husband Teased Me in Front of His Friends After a Difficult Childbirth – Then His Oldest Friend Stood Up and Did Something Nobody in That Room Expected

He had taken it from the bathroom cabinet.

He held it above his head.

“Look what I found.”

Then he shook it.

“Our triplets figured out potty training before their own mother did.”

A few people laughed.

Mark laughed first.

Then Jason.

Greg made a strange choking sound.

Colin looked down.

Anthony stared at his beer.

David did not move.

My face became hot.

Richard looked directly at me.

He was enjoying himself.

That was what hurt.

Not simply making the joke.

Enjoying my embarrassment.

He shook the package again.

“Everybody be careful tonight.”

“Don’t make her laugh too hard or we might have to protect the couch.”

More awkward laughter.

I stood there with plates in my hands.

For a second, I could not speak.

Then I said quietly,

“Richard.”

He smiled.

“What?”

“Please put that away.”

He rolled his eyes.

“Oh, come on.”

“It’s a joke.”

I swallowed.

“Put it away.”

Then he added,

“If you’re that embarrassed about it, maybe you should’ve gotten yourself fixed by now.”

Something inside me collapsed.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

I looked at the man who had watched me carry his three children.

He had been there when I could barely walk.

He had watched nurses help me out of bed.

He had heard the doctor explain what pregnancy had done to my body.

He knew.

He knew exactly why I needed those products.

And still he had chosen to turn them into entertainment.

Richard started another joke.

I barely heard it.

Because David placed his beer on the coffee table.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The glass made a small sound.

Everyone noticed.

David stood.

Richard saw him.

He smiled.

Probably expecting help.

Maybe another punch line.

David walked across the room.

Stopped directly in front of Richard.

Then held out his hand.

“Give me the package.”

Richard laughed.

“What?”

“I said give it to me.”

The room became silent.

Richard’s smile weakened.

“Relax, man.”

David did not smile.

“Give it to me.”

Richard looked around.

Nobody laughed now.

Then he handed over the package.

David took it.

He turned toward me.

For one terrible second, I thought he might say something that made everything worse.

Instead, he walked over.

Placed the package gently on the counter beside me.

Then looked at Richard again.

“You owe your wife an apology.”

Richard blinked.

“What?”

David’s voice remained calm.

“You heard me.”

Richard laughed nervously.

“Oh, come on.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend this is funny because people laughed.”

Mark shifted uncomfortably.

Jason stared at the floor.

Richard’s face hardened.

“It was a joke between me and my wife.”

David looked at me.
