At the family table Preston leaned over to my father and said, “What’s she talking about?”
My father said, “I’ve no idea.”
And Kendra turned round in her chair, and looked the whole length of that room, and said, “She’s at the back.”
PART 2 — ELEVEN CHRISTMASES
I want to be honest about my part in this, because the version where I am a quiet hero and my family are villains is not the true one.
For eleven years I did not tell them anything.
Not because they did not ask, although mostly they did not. Because every time I started to, my father’s face did a particular thing, and I stopped.
So at Christmas they got it’s fine and nothing much and same as usual.
They knew I had been deployed three times. They did not know where. They knew I had come back from the last one with a hand in a splint. They thought I had done it on a vehicle door.
