My family asked me not to wear my uniform to my grandfather’s military tribute because it would embarrass them in front of the guests. An hour later a four-star general stepped up to the microphone and looked straight at the back row.

“Staff Sergeant Tolliver? The delegation’s arrived.”

I looked back through the glass at my family.

They had no idea.

I went back in. I did not sit at the family table. I took a chair at the very back, on my own, and put my cap on the tablecloth in front of me.

Nobody asked where I had gone.

An hour later the lights went down and a four-star general walked up onto that stage.

General Harriet Voll. Sixty-one. I had met her once, in a tent.

She talked about my grandfather for eleven minutes. Chosin. The cold. His generation.

Then she stopped.

“Ladies and gentlemen. Today we honour not one soldier, but two.”
