Eight years after my husband filed for divorce the week I told him I was pregnant, he texted me an invitation to Christmas dinner at his mother’s house. He expected me to turn up alone. I turned up with four eight-year-olds who have his jaw — and then one of them asked him a question and the room stopped.

I want to be honest about that too.

I did not book that aircraft because it was the practical way to get four children to a house in the mountains on Christmas Day.

I booked it because Bobbie Mercer put her hand flat on the back of a photograph and told a room of thirty-five people that nobody believed me.

PART 4 — WHAT THE INVITATION WAS

Here is what I found out in that house, and it took the legs out from under my entire plan.

Trent already knew.

Not that there were four. He did not know that until they got out of that helicopter and neither did his mother.

But he knew there was a child.

In the November a cousin of his had sent him a link to a trade piece about Sable, which has my photograph on it and a line in the second paragraph describing me as a single mother of four.
