Eight years after my husband filed for divorce the week I told him I was pregnant, he texted me an invitation to Christmas dinner at his mother’s house. He expected me to turn up alone. I turned up with four eight-year-olds who have his jaw — and then one of them asked him a question and the room stopped.

For four years it was not a success. I want that written down. It was eleven-hour days and one contract and an overdraft and one year where I took home less than I had made on nights.

Then the regulations changed in 2023 and everybody in this state suddenly needed continuous logging on every run, and we were the only regional operator who had been doing it since 2019, and I had four years of data nobody else had.

We have sixty-one vehicles now. I am not a billionaire and there is no yacht. I have a business with a hundred and eleven employees and a bank that likes me.

The helicopter was chartered. Eleven thousand dollars, which I did not have spare and which I spent on purpose.
