I loved those jokes.
Now they felt different.
On Saturday morning, her sister texted me.
Marissa needs a few days. Please don’t push.
I replied:
Okay.
Then I did something I had not done in years.
I left one of Marissa’s problems unsolved.
The pharmacy reminder came again.
I forwarded it to her.
Nothing else.
No:
I’ll pick it up.
No:
Don’t forget.
Just the information.
An hour later she replied:
Thanks.
Small.
But different.
Sunday afternoon, I decided to pack the rest of the things she would probably need if she stayed away another week.
Running shoes.
Laptop charger.
A sketchbook she had recently started using again.
The blue sweater she always wore at her sister’s because their guest room was cold.
I pulled a storage box from the closet in my home office.
Underneath it was a narrow black portfolio case.
I froze.
I had not opened it in months.
Inside were documents I had been collecting for more than a year.
