“That has to be a mistake,” Corinne said, staring at the page.
“It’s not,” I said slowly, working through it. “It’s the same test that just confirmed I’m his father with near-total certainty. If the paternity result is accurate, the ancestry breakdown probably is too.”
Corinne called her mother that same evening, her voice unsteady as she read the ancestry results out loud over the phone.
There was a long silence on the other end.
“Mom,” Corinne said, “are you still there?”
“I need to tell you something,” her mother finally said. “Something my own grandmother told me once, years ago, when I was young enough that I mostly forgot about it until right now.”
Corinne put the call on speaker, both of us sitting at the kitchen table together.
