PART 3 — ELEVEN DAYS
Here is the thing that actually finished my sister, and it was not the photograph.
Bram had filed.
The petition was issued eleven days before that party and served at that house on the Thursday morning, by a man who handed her an envelope at the door while she was signing for the flowers.
She put it in the hall drawer with the takeaway menus.
She did not open it.
She spent the next two days doing a seating plan and arguing with a caterer about canapés for a marriage that had been over on paper since the fourth.
That is what he meant by a present. He gave her the photograph in the garden because he wanted her family to know why, in one go, with no version of it she could edit afterward.
And then he told her about the envelope in the hall.
He has said since that he did not enjoy any of it. I believe him. He has looked about fifty-six since the February and he is thirty-six.
