Not a metaphor.
Not “spiritually.”
Literally my money, with my name on the distribution schedule, eleven days apart.
The attorney at that expensive firm gave me exactly one more thing before I left, and I have thought about him kindly ever since.
He wrote a name on a sticky note.
“She used to be at this firm.
She left because we wouldn’t take cases like yours.
Don’t tell her I sent you, because I’m about to bill four hundred dollars an hour to the other side.”
Her name is Odalys Reyes-Marchetti.
She works out of two rooms above a pharmacy and she does shareholder oppression, which is a real area of law that almost nobody outside of it has heard of and which exists entirely for people who own a piece of a family business and are being treated like they don’t.
She read my grandfather’s will and the distribution schedule and one signed consent form, and then she put down her pen and said:
“Ms. Whitfield, I’m going to say something that’s going to sound cold.
Your knee is not the case.
Your knee is the reason you found the case.”
