My mother arrived the following afternoon dressed exactly the way I remembered — sharp blazer, precise makeup, the same faint, pre-loaded judgment sitting behind her eyes before she’d even stepped out of the car.

I opened the front door and let her in.

She walked into the entryway, glanced around at the space with the particular narrowed assessment she used to give my report cards, and started down the hallway toward the living room, clearly already composing whatever comment she’d planned to deliver.

Then her expression changed completely.

She stopped walking entirely, one hand reaching out to grip the doorframe beside her like she needed the physical support.

“Oh my God,” she whispered. “What is this?”
