No messages.
No explanation.
Nothing.
And now she stood on my porch looking at me like she did not know whether she was safe.
I lowered my hands.
“Come inside.”
She looked over her shoulder.
“Is Kevin here?”
“No.”
“He’s at work.”
Her whole body seemed to loosen slightly.
Then she stepped inside.
I closed the door.
Sarah stood in the hallway and stared around the house where she had grown up.
Her eyes moved toward the staircase.
Then the living room.
Then the family photographs.
Her photograph was still on the wall.
Graduation.
Sixteen years old.
Long brown hair.
Huge smile.
Kevin had wanted me to remove it months earlier.
I refused.
Sarah looked at it now.
Then looked away.
I noticed the baby move.
A tiny sound came from beneath the blanket.
