“She will be.”

“Why do you have Noah?”

“She asked me to bring him to you.”

I stared.

“Why me?”

“Because she doesn’t trust Kevin.”

That made sense.

Then Sarah added,

“And because she found something else.”

The room became cold again.

“What?”

Sarah opened the old phone.

Then showed me photographs.

Bank statements.

Wire transfers.

A second mortgage.

My eyes widened.

“What is this?”

“Dad borrowed against the house.”

I stared.

“He couldn’t.”

“The house is his.”

“He did.”

“How much?”

“Almost two hundred thousand.”

I sat back.

“What?”

Sarah continued.

“He also has credit cards, Mom.”

“Lots.”

“How do you know?”

“Rachel handled some payments through the supplier.”

“She started looking after he threatened her.”

My stomach turned.

The house.

The thing Kevin used against me constantly.

His house.

His mortgage.

His power.

He had borrowed heavily against it.

The equity was almost gone.

Then Sarah said,

“There’s more.”

Of course there was.

She showed me business records.

Kevin had been using personal credit to support a failing side business.

A small equipment brokerage he never mentioned.
