“He didn’t believe me.”
Henry frowned.
“Why?”
“He thought I was trying to stop the divorce.”
Jack stared.
“You told him there were four babies and he thought you were lying?”
“Yes.”
“That’s dumb.”
“Jack.”
“What?”
“It is.”
I could not argue.
Sam asked quietly.
“Did he not want us?”
My chest tightened.
“I don’t know.”
“But he didn’t come.”
“No.”
“Did you ask him?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“He never answered.”
Lucas watched me carefully.
He was the one who always noticed when I softened a painful truth.
Then he asked.
“Do you want us to meet him?”
I breathed slowly.
“I want you to decide whether you want the possibility.”
Henry closed his book.
“Does he live nearby?”
“He’s stationed in Colorado now.”
Jack whistled.
“So we’ve been in the same state?”
“Only for several months.”
Lucas asked.
“Does he have kids?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Does his fiancée?”
“I don’t know.”
Sam looked down.
“If we go and he doesn’t like us, can we leave?”
That almost broke me.
“Yes.”
“Immediately?”
“Yes.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
Jack said.
“I want to go.”
Henry nodded.
“Me too.”
Lucas looked at Sam.
Sam hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
I swallowed.
