My ex-husband called my pregnancy a lie, walked away, and spent eight years pretending I had invented a child to keep him. So when he invited me to his family’s Christmas dinner, I accepted. He expected me to come alone. But when four little boys crossed that snowy field beside me, he finally saw the truth pride had kept him from asking.

And Ethan knew nothing about them.

At least that was what I believed.

I closed the invitation.

Then opened it again.

My oldest son, Lucas, wandered into the kitchen wearing pajama pants covered in snowmen.

He looked at the laptop.

“Who’s Ethan Caldwell?”

My hand stopped.

At eight, my boys were old enough to know their father’s name.

I had never hidden it.

But we did not talk about him often.

“He’s your biological father.”

Lucas looked toward the hallway.

Then back at me.

“The Army guy?”

“Yes.”

He leaned closer to the screen.

“Why is he emailing you?”

I hesitated.

“He invited me to Christmas dinner.”

Lucas frowned.

“Us too?”
