My ex-husband called my pregnancy a lie, walked away, and spent eight years pretending I had invented a child to keep him. So when he invited me to his family’s Christmas dinner, I accepted. He expected me to come alone. But when four little boys crossed that snowy field beside me, he finally saw the truth pride had kept him from asking.

“When?”

“Three days before the divorce hearing.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“I spoke to you for eleven minutes.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

I remembered every word.

“You told me pregnancy was not a reason to trap your son.”

Margaret’s face collapsed.

William turned toward her.

“What?”

I continued.

“You told me women had been using babies to manipulate men for centuries.”

Margaret covered her face.

“I thought you were lying.”

“I know.”

“I thought…”

“I know.”

The boys were listening.

I stopped.

This was already too much.

“Inside.”

I said.

“If we’re going to continue this conversation, not in front of the entire property.”

Ethan nodded quickly.

We walked toward the house.

Natalie stayed beside him.

She looked shaken.

Not hostile.

That surprised me.

Inside, Christmas music played softly.

Candles burned.
