My Ex Called My Pregnancy a Lie—8 Years Later, I Arrived at His Christmas Dinner With 4 Sons

Ethan noticed.

He always noticed.

At eight, Ethan was already the most serious of the four.

Same gray eyes Adrian had.

Same way of narrowing them slightly when suspicious.

“He’s your biological father.”

Ethan stopped chewing.

“The Army guy?”

“Yes.”

The boys knew Adrian’s name.

I had never told them he was dead.

Never invented some heroic disappearance.

I told them only what they were old enough to understand.

Their parents separated before they were born.

Their father had not been part of their lives.

When they were older, I would answer more.

Apparently “older” had arrived.

Ethan pointed toward the laptop.

“Why is he emailing you?”

“He invited me to Christmas.”

“At his house?”

“His parents’ estate.”

Ethan considered this.

“Are we invited?”

That question hurt.

“No.”

“Why?”

“He doesn’t know you exist.”

Ethan frowned.

“You told us you told him.”

“I did.”

“Then how doesn’t he know?”

I gave him the only answer that made sense.

“He didn’t believe me.”

Ethan stared at me like I had said Adrian believed the moon was made of cheese.

“That’s stupid.”

“Adults can be very committed to stupid ideas.”

He nodded solemnly.

“That explains a lot.”

I laughed despite myself.

Then he asked:

“Does he still think you lied?”

“Yes.”
