“I nearly didn’t open the message,” Simone continued. “Then I saw the estimated relationship. Grandmother. I sat in my car outside the pharmacy for forty minutes.”
She said she’d spent weeks trying to figure out how to reach us without frightening us, until she found an old shared folder on a cloud account Callum’s best friend Priya had once set up for the two of them to trade football highlight videos back in high school. Buried in that folder, forgotten for a decade, was a voice memo file labeled only “For Simone — when it’s time,” recorded by my daughter in a hospital waiting room four days before she gave birth.
Priya had moved overseas for work not long after Callum’s death and hadn’t opened that shared folder in years. She’d only rediscovered it while backing up old files before a phone upgrade, found the recording with my daughter’s voice on it, and finally understood what she’d been carrying without knowing it.
“Priya sent it to me two weeks ago,” Simone said. “I’ve listened to it eleven times. I had it transcribed because I couldn’t keep breaking down every time I pressed play, and I needed to be able to actually read it in front of you instead of falling apart before I got the words out.”
