The story, it turned out, did not stay in that room.

A teacher had taken a photo — the room full of children with cut and shaved hair, Millie in the center in Letty’s wig, everyone crying and laughing at once. It spread, the way these things do. And the community responded.

A local salon offered free professional cuts to even out all the children’s jagged home haircuts, and to properly collect the donated hair for a wig charity. Parents who heard the story donated. Within a week, enough hair and money had been gathered to fund wigs for a dozen children — not just Millie, but other kids at other schools going through the same isolation.
