As early as 2008, Reeves and Alex Winter had shown enthusiasm for a third Bill & Ted film, but the project went into development limbo.[188] In 2020, the third film in the franchise Bill & Ted Face the Music was released.[189][190] The critic from Salon magazine was disappointed in Reeves’s performance, but praised the film for its message that “music has the power to unite the world”.[191] Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a grade B, and complimented the onscreen chemistry between Reeves and Winter.[192] He also appeared in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run as a tumbleweed named Sage.[193] Reeves appears as Johnny Silverhand in the video game Cyberpunk 2077.[194][195] In December 2021, Reeves returned to the screen for the fourth film in The Matrix franchise: The Matrix Resurrections. Carrie-Anne Moss also reprised her role as Trinity.[196][197] The Matrix Resurrections was a box office disappointment;[198] one critic praised Reeves’s and Moss’s performances, but thought the film was “no game-changer”.[199]
2023–present: career progression and books
In 2023, Reeves reprised his role as the title character in John Wick: Chapter 4.[200] It received critical acclaim; several reviewers cited the film among the greatest action films ever made.[201][202][203] He also reprised his role as Johnny Silverhand in the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty.[204] A comic book series, BRZRKR, co-written by Reeves was published in three volumes starting in March 2021 and concluding in October 2023.[205] Issue #1 sold over 615,000 copies, making it the top-selling single issue since Star Wars #1 in 2015.[206][207]
