I went to my son’s apartment with a duplicate key, convinced I was going to catch my daughter-in-law with another man. “Today this lie ends,” I thought before opening the bedroom door. But the woman inside wasn’t her: beside a bottle of champagne, I found my own husband after 32 years of marriage… and what I heard next was even worse.

“If that woman is cheating on my son, I’m throwing her out of her own house today.”

I muttered the words under my breath as I slid the duplicate key into the lock.

It was a little after four in the afternoon.

The hallway outside Samuel and Chloe’s apartment was completely empty.

That was exactly why I had chosen this time.

My son would be at the engineering firm until at least seven.

Chloe usually taught yoga and Pilates classes until six thirty.

And if she had been lying about where she went in the afternoons, today I intended to prove it.

My name is Margaret Lawson.

I was fifty-seven years old.

I had been married to my husband, Walter, for thirty-two years.

We had one son.

Samuel.
