A witness.
Claire Ashworth.
My mother.
I stood so fast the chair scraped backward.
“What?”
Lenora stared.
Talia flipped the page.
There was a short handwritten statement.
My mother’s handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
I, Claire Ashworth, confirm that Enoch Bromel located me in 2001 and informed me that Lenora Calder Bromel was my biological mother. I have chosen not to make contact at this time. This is my decision alone. Enoch has agreed to keep my identity private unless I change my mind.
I couldn’t speak.
Lenora looked shattered.
“She knew.”
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
My mother had known Lenora was alive.
And had stayed away.
For seventeen years.
“Why?”
Talia turned the page.
There was more.
My mother’s handwriting continued.
I do not stay away because I hate her. I stay away because I have spent forty years building a life around surviving the belief that I was unwanted. I am not yet strong enough to discover whether that belief was true. Maybe someday I will be.
Below it was one final line.
Dated sixteen years later.
Only months before her cancer diagnosis.
I think I’m ready now.
My knees gave way.
I sat.
Lenora was sobbing.
Talia slid one last sheet toward me.
A letter.
Never mailed.
