I DROVE SIX HOURS TO MY BROTHER’S WEDDING AND FOUND THE VENUE EMPTY — “IT WAS YESTERDAY.” THEY HADN’T INVITED ME

I am strong, Dad.

You just never imagined I’d use it on my own behalf instead of yours.”

PART 4

The investigation was not something I had to drive. Once forgery of a servicemember’s documents is reported, with evidence as clean as mine, it moves on its own.

Justin had, in fact, forged the guarantor contract. He’d accessed enough of my information — the arrogance of a brother who assumed I’d never look, never fight, never do anything but pay — to construct a document making me responsible, and he’d changed the wedding date to keep me away from the venue and the final accounting until the debt was mine.

It was not a sophisticated fraud. It was the lazy, entitled fraud of a man who’d never once faced a consequence, who genuinely believed that “you’re strong, Samantha, you’ll handle it” was a law of physics.
