I DROVE SIX HOURS TO MY BROTHER’S WEDDING AND FOUND THE VENUE EMPTY — “IT WAS YESTERDAY.” THEY HADN’T INVITED ME

And then I let my father make his second call.

“Samantha. The venue says you’re refusing to pay. They’re saying you called them making accusations. What is wrong with you? This is a family debt—”

“Dad,” I said. “It’s not a family debt. It’s a forged one. Someone signed my name on a $24,000 guarantee I never agreed to. Someone used my address and my email to make me legally responsible for Justin’s wedding — the wedding I wasn’t invited to, that I paid twelve thousand dollars toward as a gift, that I drove six hours to attend before finding out it had happened the day before.

I know who forged it. So do you, I suspect.

Here’s what’s happening now. I’ve reported it as identity fraud. I’ve engaged a military attorney. And forging a Navy officer’s financial documents isn’t a family squabble I’m going to smooth over the way I’ve smoothed over everything for this family my entire life.
