Three days later Elena took a test — positive. She planned to tell me over dinner. But I walked in with a suitcase, said I needed space. She touched the test hidden in her purse and decided not to show me. She wanted to know if I’d choose her before knowing there was a baby.
I didn’t. Four days later I filed for divorce.
Now I stared at four thriving five-year-olds beside the woman I’d abandoned.
I drove to her office. She made me wait three hours on the sidewalk. When she came out, she wasn’t surprised.
“I saw you on television. Elena, I need to know.”
“There’s an envelope. At your old law office. I left it five years ago, the week you filed. Go read it. Then we’ll talk.”
