I Became My Brother’s Surrogate—Then He Saw His Baby and Said, “I Can’t Take Her Home”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know.”

He stepped inside.

“I panicked.”

I laughed.

“You panicked?”

“Yes.”

“She is a newborn.”

“She does not get to disappear because you panicked.”

“I know.”

I pointed toward the hallway.

“Go tell your wife.”

He looked toward Vanessa’s room.

Then back.

“I can’t.”

That sentence stopped me.

Not because I sympathized.

Because it sounded wrong.

“You can’t what?”

“Talk to her yet.”

“Why?”

He sat.

I had never seen Ethan look so exhausted.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“There’s something else.”

Of course there was.

“What did you do?”

He looked at the floor.

“I lost my job.”

Silence.

“When?”

“Four months ago.”
