I Became a Surrogate for My Brother – When He Came to the Hospital for His Newborn Daughter, He Looked at Her and Said, ‘I Can’t Take This Baby Home’

I remember thinking it was strange.

Once I asked if things were okay at work. “Yeah, just busy,” he said, changing the subject so quickly I noticed.

I told myself he was just nervous. New fathers get nervous.

At the final ultrasound before delivery, the technician slowly guided the wand along the baby’s spine, humming quietly. Then she paused.

She kept the wand still on the baby’s lower back a beat longer than necessary.

I told myself he was just nervous.

Then she smiled, moved along, and said everything looked fine.

I studied Melissa’s face. She hadn’t noticed anything.

But Ryan was staring at the screen as though he’d glimpsed something none of us were meant to see.

He didn’t speak a single word the entire ride home.

She hadn’t noticed anything.

“One more push, Ivy. You’ve got this.”

I squeezed Nurse Bianca’s hand so hard I feared I’d break her fingers. The contraction peaked, and I pushed through it with everything left in me.

Then, suddenly, the room filled with that unbelievable sound — a baby’s cry. My niece’s cry.

“She’s perfect,” I whispered, breathless. “Ryan, go hold your daughter.”

I squeezed Nurse Bianca’s hand so hard.
