I whispered:
“She knew?”
“We don’t know how much.”
Henry spoke carefully.
“There may be more.”
I looked at him.
“What more?”
He placed a thin folder on the table.
“Twenty-four years ago, Alexander hired a private investigator named Paul Larkin.”
“He traced a possible lead to San Antonio.”
My body went cold.
“Teresa?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He interviewed her.”
“And?”
“She denied knowing anything.”
I stood.
My knees nearly failed.
Margaret moved but did not touch me.
I appreciated that.
“She lied.”
Henry nodded.
“Possibly.”
“No.”
“She raised me.”
“She had to know.”
Alexander spoke.
“We do not know why.”
I turned toward him.
“You searched for me.”
“Every day.”
