Five years after the divorce, my ex-husband chose the seat next to mine in first class — there were four empty ones

Four empty seats in that cabin. I counted them while he was putting his bag up.

I said, “You could sit somewhere else.”

“I could.”

“So why don’t you.”

And he did the smile and said: “Five years. I thought we might catch up.”

I said, “You’ve always mistaken arrogance for confidence.”

And he said: “And you’ve always hidden behind something.”

That one went in, because it is the closest thing to accurate that man has ever said to me.

Five years ago we were, briefly, the couple people wrote about.
