Eight years after my husband filed for divorce the week I told him I was pregnant, he texted me an invitation to Christmas dinner at his mother’s house. He expected me to turn up alone. I turned up with four eight-year-olds who have his jaw — and then one of them asked him a question and the room stopped.

He went down on his knees on a hall floor and said yes, and that was the most he had in him, and eleven seconds of honesty is not the same as a father.

He pays properly now. It went to court again and it is not three hundred and eleven dollars any more, and it goes into the same account, and I have still never spent any of it.

The children have a picture of him on their shelf and they are not damaged and they are not obsessed and they ask about him roughly four times a year.

Beau asked me in the spring whether their dad was a bad man and I said no, and that he is a man who was frightened at twenty-seven and has never been able to catch up with it, and that this is not the same thing and is not their job to fix.

He married the woman in the red dress. I know because Bobbie told me.

Because that is the part I did not see coming.

Roberta Mercer has been to this house nine times in two years.

She wrote to me in the February after that Christmas. Two pages. It does not contain an apology and I have read it about eleven times looking for one.
