Dolly Parton made a surprise appearance at the grand opening of Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop in Tennessee, stepping out in her signature high heels and colorful fringe outfit.

So, consider the two competing offers in front of a 20-year-old girl from a cabin with no electricity.

One man was offering her a career and asking her to stay publicly unattached to sell it.

The other man was offering her a marriage on the condition that he never had to participate in the career at all.

She took both, and she took both by concealment.

On May 30th, 1966, the second anniversary of the laundromat, which is the kind of detail she has never once let anyone forget, Dolly Parton and Carl Dean drove to Ringold, Georgia, and got married in a small Baptist church there.

Ringold in the 1960s was a wedding town.

Georgia had no waiting period, and couples drove down from Tennessee constantly to get it done quickly and quietly.

That is why they went, not romance, logistics.

The dress was white and by her account homemade and she has said her mother had a hand in it.

Her mother was there.

So was by the surviving accounts the preacher’s wife who served as the other witness because the couple didn’t have enough people present.

That was the guest list.

A mother and a stranger.

Look at what’s missing.

There is no father in the room.

Robert Lee Parton, the man whose name would one day be on a National Literacy Foundation, was not at his daughter’s wedding.

There were no siblings and she had 11 of them.

There was no record label, no pH๏τographer, no press, and there was a LIIE waiting on the other end of the drive.

They kept the marriage quiet for close to a year because Monument had made its preference clear and she had decided to ignore it without ever giving them the satisfaction of an argument.

That is the first thing worth understanding about how this woman operates.

She almost never fights.

She just does the thing and then declines to discuss it.

The wedding pH๏τograph that survives shows a girl in a white dress holding flowers with a young man beside her in a suit.

It has been reproduced everywhere.

It is treated as the sweet, humble beginning of America’s favorite marriage.

It is actually a document of a contract negotiation she won by not attending it.
