The Controversy: Can Soursop Fight Cancer?

The most widespread claim about soursop is that it can “cure” or “fight” cancer.

  • Laboratory Findings: Test-tube studies have indeed shown that soursop extracts can target and kill certain types of cancer cells (such as breast, prostate, and lung cancer cells) because they contain compounds called annonaceous acetogenins.

  • The Reality in Humans: Despite promising laboratory results, there is currently a complete lack of clinical trials and human studies proving that eating soursop or taking its extracts can treat or cure cancer in living humans. Relying on soursop instead of proven medical treatments for cancer is extremely dangerous.

Safety Precautions and Toxicity Risks

While enjoying the fresh fruit as part of a balanced diet is generally safe, consuming concentrated extracts, supplements, or excessive amounts of soursop tea carries significant health risks:

  • Neurotoxicity: Heavy or prolonged consumption of soursop has been linked to atypical movement disorders and nerve damage resembling Parkinson’s disease. This is attributed to certain neurotoxic compounds found naturally in the plant, particularly in the seeds and roots.

  • Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Interferences: Because soursop can naturally lower blood pressure and blood sugar, individuals taking medications for hypertension or diabetes should exercise caution to avoid dangerously low levels.
