I made it in nineteen.
I called ahead.
Not as Julian’s wife.
Not as Eleanor’s daughter.
As myself.
I requested the watch commander.
I gave my name.
Rank.
And told them an elderly family member in custody might require medical evaluation.
I did not accuse anyone.
Not yet.
Accusations make people defensive.
Facts make people listen.
When I arrived, the lobby smelled like stale coffee and disinfectant.
A young desk officer looked up.
“Ma’am?”
“Lieutenant Colonel Valerie Vance.”
“I’m here for Eleanor Vance.”
His expression changed slightly.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“She’s being interviewed.”
“Has she been arrested?”
“No.”
“Detained?”
He hesitated.
“She’s being questioned.”
