AT 19 I PROMISED TO WAIT FOR MY HUSBAND WHILE HE WAS IN VIETNAM. HE WENT MISSING, AND I WAITED 55 YEARS

Margaret’s granddaughter comes to see us. She was afraid we’d hate her for what her grandmother did, and I had to hold her face in my hands and tell her that she is the reason we found each other, that she undid in one act of courage what her grandmother spent fifty-five years hiding, and that she is a blessing, not a reminder. She cries every time. She’s a good girl. Her grandmother’s sin is not hers.

Chapter 5: The Wait That Finally Ended

That was two years ago.

Danny and I have had two years, and they have been the happiest of my long life, which is a strange thing to say at seventy-eight, but it’s true. We got old together after all. Not the way we planned — not the fifty-five years we were owed — but we got the ending, and sometimes the ending is enough, if you refuse to let bitterness eat it.
