After 6 years working abroad, I came home to surprise my mom in the $600K house I bought her. My brother’s wife answered the door: “The maid is

The heavy rumble of the garage door opening vibrated through the floorboards. My mother’s fingers instantly clawed into the fabric of my jacket. “That’s Derek. Honey, please, I am begging you, be nice.”

My brother swaggered through the interior door hauling bags of artisan groceries. He froze for half a heartbeat when he saw me, his internal gears grinding violently before he slapped on a mask of pure, aggressive delight.

“Iris! The hero returns!” he bellowed, dropping the bags to envelope me in a suffocating bear hug. “Why didn’t you call? Mel, get in here!”

Melissa glided into the kitchen, her brain clearly rewinding our interaction on the porch. To her credit, she was a masterful chameleon. She didn’t flinch. She simply recalibrated her entire existence. “Oh my goodness, you should have called! I would have made up the guest room!” she chirped, dripping with synthetic sugar.

“What guest room?” I asked, my voice devoid of inflection. “The house appears to be at maximum capacity.”

Before she could spin a lie, a voice like a rusted gate hinge echoed from the living room sofa. “Ellen! I need iced tea. Extra lemon this time.”
