After 14 Hours of Labor, My Husband Whispered Something That Made My Blood Run Cold

“Why isn’t the baby’s name filled in?”

My silence answered.

“What did Nolan say?”

“He asked me to wait.”

“For the name?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“No.”

“Mom.”

“You picked Caleb.”

“I know.”

“You’ve called this baby Caleb for three months.”

“I know.”

“So write Caleb.”

I looked down.

“What if there’s a reason?”

“What reason could justify this?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s the problem.”

She picked up the pen.

I did not take it.

“Claire.”

“I’m waiting.”

She stared at me.

“Why?”

Because I knew Nolan.

Because three good years had to matter.
