The Night Before I Gave Birth, I Heard My Husband Offer My Doctor a Fortune to Make Sure I Never Came Home—He Thought I Was Sleeping, but I Heard Every Word
At 6:14 the next morning, two detectives walked my husband out of my maternity suite.
He still thought I knew nothing.
That was the part I remember most clearly.
Not the handcuffs.
Not the hospital administrator quietly locking the door behind him.
Not even the contraction that hit me so hard I had to grip the bedrail with both hands.
It was Grant’s face.
For one brief second, he looked back at me through the doorway with the same concerned expression he had worn for months.
The devoted husband.
The nervous father.
The man who had assembled a white oak crib in our nursery and spent three evenings arguing with me over whether the walls should be cream or pale green.
He even mouthed:
“I’ll be right back.”
I nearly laughed.
Because less than eight hours earlier, I had heard him arranging a future in which I would never leave that hospital at all.
