My family asked me not to wear my uniform to my grandfather’s military tribute because it would embarrass them in front of the guests. An hour later a four-star general stepped up to the microphone and looked straight at the back row.

PART 1 — THE BACK ROW

My name is Staff Sergeant Rhiannon Tolliver and I am thirty-four.

My grandfather was turning ninety and the family had organised a tribute for him at the Ashcombe Club,n which is the kind of place that has a coat of arms on the napkins.

He served in Korea. I have been proud of that man my entire life.

My family have never been especially proud of me.

My brother Preston is a vice-president at a logistics group. My father talks about his promotions at every meal. My sister Blythe married into a family with a boat.

And I joined the Army at twenty-two.

In my father’s house that made me the one who settled.

I got out of the car in my dress uniform and Preston looked at me across the drive.

“You actually wore that.”

“Yes.”

His wife Kendra looked at the ribbons on my chest.
