Before we reached the altar, my three-year-old grandson squeezed my hand and whispered, “Grandpa, she was mean to Mommy.” Then he pointed toward my future wife and pulled a USB drive from his tiny pocket—one that would soon reveal the truth she had been hiding.

PART 1

My name is Victor Salazar.

I was sixty-one years old when my three-year-old grandson stopped me ten minutes before my wedding and changed the rest of my life with one sentence.

“Grandpa, please don’t marry her.”

I looked down.

Lucas was gripping my hand tightly.

His gray suit was too large.

His bow tie was crooked.

One shoelace had already come loose.

He should have been asking about cake.

Or balloons.

Or whether he could run through the ballroom.

Instead, his face looked terrified.

I crouched in front of him.

“What happened, champ?”

Lucas glanced toward the end of the hallway.

Then whispered.

“She hit Mommy.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”
